Reflections

1. Describe key trends that you discovered for this class?
Key Trends: Many students have behavior issues and learning disabilities, mostly written language. Many students are failing one or more subjects in sixth grade.

2. Describe the needs, interests, and characteristics of your learners that surprised you.
Two of my students have Asperger's. They need direct instruction, constant reminders, and discreet nonverbal cues. Dominic gets confused easily and benefits from "check-ins". In the student survey he made it clear that he did not want to make new friends. He has recently been hanging out with the wrong crowd, wandering the halls, and not completing any work. Madison has the same diagnosis, she has trouble with communication and is frustrated very easily, this is evident with her frequent outbursts in class.sHE IS OBSESSED WITH CATS, I usually make references to cats when I can. Constantly communicating her progress with her. Jessica, ADHD, when she is medicated it is a good day, if not I am in trouble. She is disruptive and too social at times. Class work and Homework are often incomplete or missing. Sometimes she is quiet and calm other times she is disruptive and immature.

3. How will these characteristics affect the way you plan, teach, and manage this class? I have moved the classes seats three times in the past few weeks. I constantly have to alot more time for these students and give discreet nonverbal cues to get them on task and keep them on task. I have set up an additional agenda at the opposite side of the room to catch their attention if they are not paying attention to my directions and I am constantly prodding. I am reinforcing the simplest things with demonstrations and visual organizers, I have even used plays to grab their ATTENTION.
